LADY RED DEVILS
The Atkins Lady Red Devils (10-13, 3-9) broke a 5-game losing streak by defeating the Danville Lady Little Johns, 57-43, Friday (2-12) in a 3A-4 conference game at Atkins. It was the final game of the regular season at home for seniors Brailey Mize, Payton Harvill, and Kaylen Martin.
Stephanie Aldrete hit two free throws and Shelby Davis hit a lay-up to give Atkins a 4-0 lead, but Danville scored 8 of the final 10 points of the quarter to take an 8-6 lead after the first quarter of play.
Kaylen Martin’s jumper tied the game, 8-8, but a 7-0 Danville run gave the Lady Little Johns a 15-8 lead with 3:10 left in the second quarter. Brailey Mize hit a jumper, Davis a driving lay-up, and Martin a short jumper for Atkins that trimmed the deficit to 16-14. Allegra Player’s two free throws increased the Danville lead to 18-14, but Martin’s free throw with 15 seconds left in the quarter cut the Danville lead to 18-15 at the half.
The Lady Red Devils took the lead for good with a 12-0 run in the opening 4 minutes of the third quarter to take a 27-18 lead. Shelby Davis had two baskets and scored 7 points during the run. Sydney Webb’s 3-pointer kept the lead at 7-points, 34-27, with 15 seconds left, but a Danville 3-pointer with 1 second left in the third quarter cut the Atkins lead to 34-30 entering the final quarter of play.
Davis hit a lay-up, Martin hit 3 of 4 free throws, and Aldrete hit the second of two free throws that gave the Lady Red Devils a 40-33 lead with 5:49 left in the game. After Player hit two free throws for Danville, Martin hit a lay-up, Webb a set-shot, and Mize knocked down a jumper and hit the first of two free throws that increased the Atkins lead to 47-35 with 3:45 left. Lauren Spencer hit a jumper and knocked down a 3-pointer for Danville, cutting the deficit to 48-40, but the Lady Red Devils knocked down 7 of 10 free throws in the final 2 minutes of the game to secure the 14-point victory, 57-43.
Danville hit 15 of 45 field goal attempts, 7 of 12 free throws, and committed 27 turnovers.
Atkins hit 17 of 53 field goal attempts, 21 of 33 free throws (13 of 20 in the 4th quarter), and committed 16 turnovers. Shelby Davis scored 15 points, Kaylen Martin scored 13 points, Brailey Mize scored 9 points, Stephanie Aldrete scored 7 points, Brailey Mize scored 7 points, Sydney Webb scored 6 points, Payton Harvill scored 5 points, and Kelsey Dixson scored 2 points for the Lady Red Devils.
The Atkins Red Devils (13-11, 5-7) after trailing all but the opening 3 minutes of the first half, rallied in the final two quarters and defeated the Danville Little Johns, 64-56, Friday (2-12) in a 3A-4 conference game on Senior Night at Atkins. It was the final home game for seniors Jordan Vaughn, Devin Watson, Chris Beard, and Noah Regier.
Jordan Vaughn’ jumper gave Atkins a quick 2-0 lead, but 7-0 Danville run gave the Little Johns a 7-2 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter. Cory Childress’ 3-pointer ended the run and trimmed the deficit to 7-5, but Jesus Dominquez’s short jumper with 1 minute left in the quarter increased the lead to 11-5.
Vaughn’s jumper, Devin Watson’s rebound basket, and Childress’ bucket cut the Danville lead to 13-11, but Jake Madding hit a jumper and knocked down two free throws that increased the lead to 17-12 with 4 ½ minutes left in the second quarter. Domiinquez hit a short jumper that gave the Little Johns a 19-14 lead with 4:15 left, but Chris Beard’s 3-pointer narrowed the lead to 19-17, and Zack Harris’ jumper with 30 seconds left in the second quarter cut the Danville lead to 21-20 at the half.
Watson’s basket gave Atkins a 22-21 lead, but a Danville 3-pointer gave the Little Johns a 24-22 lead. Vaughn’s back to back jumpers, Watson’s put-back, and Harris’s lay-up gave Atkins a 30-24 lead with 5 ½ minutes left in the third quarter. After Childress’ 3-pointer increased the lead to 36-29, Harris drove for a lay-up, Parker Sweet hit a jumper, and Childress hit a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in the quarter that gave Atkins a double digit lead, 43-33, entering the final quarter of play.
A 5-0 Danville run in the opening 2 minutes of the fourth quarter cut the Atkins lead to 43-38, but Vaughn hit a jumper, Watson canned two free throws, and Harris hit a 3-pointer that gave the Red Devils a 12-point lead, 50-38, with 5:07 left in the game. Harris’ lay-up with 2:08 left kept Atkins on top, 58-46, but a 6-0 Danville run cut the lead to 58-52 with 1:05 left. Sweet knocked down a free throw to complete a 3-point play and Harris hit 3 of 4 free throws to give Atkins a 64-54 lead before a Little John basket with 1 second left in the game trimmed the final deficit to 64-56.
Danville hit 23 of 51 field goal attempts, 4 of 9 free throws, and committed 15 turnovers. Jake Madding scored 18 points to lead the Little Johns.
Atkins hit 22 of 56 field goal attempts, 15 of 21 free throws (8 of 10 in 4th quarter) and committed only 7 turnovers. Jordan Vaughn scored 15 points, Zack Harris scored 14 points, Cory Childress scored 11 points, Devin Watson scored 10 points, Chris Beard scored 9 points, and Parker Sweet scored 5 points for the Red Devils.
